How to play this game

This activity is a simple game that relies on their ability to find things concealed in a bigger picture. A large picture is shown with part of it in the smaller window nearby. The object of the game is for children to find the smaller image in the larger picture. When the item has been found, a fanfare will sound and the next picture will appear.

To exit, click on the small hand in the lower right corner of the screen.

Some of the objects are concealed because they are among lots of similar objects. In these cases children need to look closely at each item to find distinguishing similarities or differences. These may be colour, size or shape. Features may be alike, but with very small changes.

Some of the pictures have animals that are using forms of camouflage to remain concealed. This may help the animal to not become prey or to help it catch prey.

There are many forms of camouflage.

• Some animals are effectively hidden in backgrounds that are of a similar appearance. Animals such as chameleons and octopuses can change their skin patterns and colours to suit their environments.
• Some of the animals look like something else, which is not of any interest to the observer. Eg. Stick insects, stonefish.
• Animals such as the leopard have patterns that make it difficult to make out their outline in surrounding vegetation.
• Zebras have irregular lines that make it difficult to judge their speed or position when they are moving.
• Some lizards can flatten their bodies when in danger. This is helpful as it reduces a visible shadow and they can blend into the background.
• Some animals, such as crabs, can hide by decorating themselves with things like twigs, sand, pieces of shell or seaweed. This helps them to break up their outlines, conceal their features and to match their backgrounds.
• Being transparent hides some sea creatures while being silver can make some fish reflective and hard to see from the side.

All these forms of camouflage help creatures to survive and thrive in their environments.
